Getting ready for fall and winter

Whether we want to admit it or not, we are now well into Fall and Winter is just around the corner. With early morning frosts and snowy conditions on the horizon, it is a good time of year to review how your company intends to manage these hazards at your worksites. 

Reviewing your company's annual general hazard assessment is always a good idea, but there are also some specific exercises that you can conduct in order to prepare for slip/trip/fall season:

• Site or area specific hazard assessments to look for areas of concern before slippery conditions develop.
• Discuss the importance of footwear condition with workers to ensure that personal protective equipment is suitable for seasonal challenges.
• Ensure that housekeeping inspections also focus on "transition areas" like office foyers, boot rooms and areas unfinished floors, as these often overlooked areas are responsible for many slip/fall injuries each year in many industries.
